ATLANTA (PulseWire) — A man was arrested at the bustling Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after his family notified police about his plans for a mass shooting, highlighting the critical role of community vigilance.

Billy Joe Cagle, a 49-year-old from Cartersville, Georgia, was found with an assault rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition in his Chevrolet pickup truck parked outside the airport terminal.

“The family expressed serious concerns after he streamed his intent to 'shoot it up' on social media,” Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said during a press briefing.

Cagle, described as a convicted felon, arrived at the airport around 9:30 a.m., just minutes before police intercepted him. Capt. Greg Sparacio of the Cartersville Police Department confirmed the family’s timely tip allowed law enforcement to act swiftly and avert a potential tragedy.

Police noted that Cagle was excitedly approaching the TSA security checkpoint, raising red flags among officers who recognized him from the family-provided photos.

During his arrest, which was captured on body-camera footage, Cagle was seen resisting compliance with police commands, yelling during the process as he was taken into custody.

Cagle now faces serious charges that include making terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a felon. Authorities are investigating how he acquired the gun, which he is prohibited from owning.

“What could have been a tragedy is a success today, thanks to the brave actions of a family member and law enforcement,” stated Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shared similar sentiments on social media, praising the swift response that prevented harm.
