In brief

Latvia’s military logged a 30‑minute intrusion from an unidentified aircraft near the Russia-Belarus frontier, issuing X posts to keep locals indoors. The object left Latvian airspace, ending the threat. The incident follows a pattern of Ukrainian drone flights spilling into neighboring NATO Baltic states, raising spill‑over concerns.

Latvia’s armed forces reported on Sunday that an unidentified object entered its airspace near the borders with Russia and Belarus, remaining for about 30 minutes before leaving.

The military posted on X, saying, We inform you that there is a threat in the airspace… If you notice a low‑flying or suspicious object, do not approach. After the object exited Latvian airspace, the armed forces said the threat had ended and urged residents to stay indoors for safety.

Earlier this week, a series of Ukrainian military drones have strayed into the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, prompting security alerts in several NATO Baltic states. Those missed‑target flights are now seen as increasing spill‑over risk from the Ukraine war, with Moscow accusing Kyiv of using NATO airspace as a launch cover for attacks and Kyiv blaming Russian signal jamming.

Latvia’s incident follows a government collapse earlier in the year that was tied to heightened security concerns. The NATO bloc largely attributes such incursions to Russian provocations stemming from the 2021 invasion of Ukraine.
