Pope Leo XIV has stressed the critical need to safeguard human dignity as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, addressing the issue during the Vatican's inaugural Mass for Catholic social media influencers. The event, held in St Peter's Basilica, was part of the Jubilee of Youth, a significant week-long assembly for the youth of the Catholic Church that occurs every 25 years.

The Pope remarked, "Nothing that comes from man and his creativity should be used to undermine the dignity of others." His comments reinforce a recurring theme in his papacy regarding the ethical implications of emerging technologies. He implored attendees to ensure that advancements in AI should contribute to the "benefit of all humanity."

Acknowledging the rapid pace of technological change, Pope Leo XIV called to action, urging society to defend our "ability to listen and speak" in what he termed as a "new era." He emphasized the necessity of cultivating a modern mindset and language that prioritizes love and compassion.

Additionally, the Pope encouraged social media influencers present to focus their content on helping "those who suffer and need to know the Lord." He stated, "Be agents of communion, capable of breaking down the logic of division and polarisation, of individualism and egocentrism."

This address builds on the Pope’s previous statements about AI, where he underscored the role of the Church in defending human dignity and justice in an increasingly technology-driven society. Pope Leo XIV is the first pontiff from the United States and has a rich history of serving marginalized communities, advocating for unity and compassion throughout his clerical career.
