In brief

The world's largest crocodile in captivity, Cassius, has passed away at a wildlife sanctuary on Green Island, Australia. This remarkable creature, measuring nearly 5.5 meters (18 feet) and weighing close to one tonne, was believed to be over a century old. Cassius was a beloved attraction at the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat since his capture in the Northern Territory back in the 1980s.

In recognition of his extraordinary size, Cassius was awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest crocodile in captivity in 2011. His sanctuary took to social media to express their grief, referring to him as "our beloved mate" and a "cherished member of our family." Prior to his life in captivity, Cassius was notorious for hunting cattle and disturbing boat engines, reflecting his wild nature. George Craig, the habitat’s founder, had purchased Cassius in 1987, and their bond lasted over 37 years.Unfortunately, Cassius's health began to decline following Craig’s recent move to Cairns. Acknowledging his advanced age, the habitat stated, "He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc." They expressed gratitude to all the visitors who showed Cassius kindness throughout his life, mentioning that the sanctuary may operate under limited capacity as they mourn their loss.
