In brief
A collision involving a van transporting 14 tourists and a pickup truck occurred on Thursday in eastern Idaho. As emergency responders worked on the scene, several victims were airlifted to hospitals due to serious injuries. Both vehicles erupted in flames, leading to the unfortunate loss of six passengers from the van along with the driver of the pickup. The identities of the deceased are yet to be disclosed as investigations into the incident continue. A local resident, who witnessed the aftermath, described the chaotic scene and emphasized the dangerous conditions of the road leading to the busy park, which is entering its peak tourist season.
The chaos unfolded on a busy highway about 16 miles (25 km) from Yellowstone's entrance. The authorities closed the road for several hours while emergency responders attended to victims and cleared the wreckage. Police have stated that the local coroner's office will announce the names of the deceased once their families have been informed. Yellowstone National Park, recognized as the nation's oldest park, spans nearly 3,500 square miles across Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, attracting around four million visitors annually, with the bulk visiting during the summer months.
