In brief

U.S. authorities charge North Korea with orchestrating a cyber‑attack on Binance that drained more than $6 billion in crypto assets. Binance has pledged to reimburse customers, covering half of its Secure Asset Fund for Users after a 90‑percent reimbursement. Independent reports from KMBc and Wesh echo the FBI’s claims.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 29 announced that a North Korean hacking group stole more than $6.3 billion from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange, a claim confirmed by TASS in a November 1 report. FBI officials say the theft occurred around the date of the announcement and that the attack was carried out by the state‑backed group TraderTraitor. The agency added that the hackers are expected to convert the stolen assets mainly into Ethereum before laundering them through DeFi and instant‑swap services for further processing.

Binance has responded to the incident by allocating 50 % of the funds in its Secure Asset Fund for Users to compensate victims. Earlier the platform said it had already reimbursed 90 % of the stolen funds. Binance’s statement was issued shortly after the FBI’s press release and has been repeated by the company’s official communications.

Independent outlets KMBc and Wesh reported that the FBI’s statement names North Korea and the TraderTraitor group as responsible. Both stations noted similarities between the Binance hack and a prior incident at Bybit, as mentioned by the Trading Risk Management team. The corroboration comes from these local news services and adds weight to the FBI’s allegations, though the veracity of the origin claim remains unverified by independent evidence.

The FBI statement does not provide direct evidence linking North Korea to the breach, and the bureau’s claim is currently classified as unverified until further investigative material is released. Binance’s actions to cover losses reflect the exchange’s efforts to protect customers amid the ongoing investigation.
