The southern Nigerian city of Calabar turned into a festivity hub this weekend, celebrating the much-anticipated Calabar Carnival—a spectacle known for its colorful street parades and cultural richness. The event kicked off to lively music and dancing, drawing in crowds from all corners of the nation and the diaspora, as spectators reveled in the electrifying atmosphere.
This year, the month-long celebrations continue to captivate attendees with vibrant floats and performances from various ethnic groups, reflecting the true essence of Nigeria's cultural diversity. According to organizers, the carnival has attracted nearly two million visitors, highlighting the significance of the event in the country's festive calendar.
“Different designs, different costumes, and a lot of energy fill the streets,” exclaimed attendee Grace Job, as she joined the joyous crowds celebrating the 20th anniversary of the carnival. With 14 bands taking part in various performances and competitions, the air resonated with the rhythms of Afrobeats that kept participants dancing.
The costumes worn by the carnival's participants often carried historical references, reminding spectators of the city's connections to the Atlantic slave trade, including a tribute to native currencies like manillas. Moreover, one creatively-dressed participant recalled colonial history by donning an outfit inspired by British West Africa currency during the reign of King George VI.
“This carnival showcases our traditions and culture,” stated Rejoice Elemi, a 25-year-old dancer and civil engineering student. The festivities culminated on Friday night with exhilarating performances by renowned musicians like Runtown and Iyanya in a carnival concert, while the Calas Vegas troupe was honored with the title of best carnival band for the second consecutive year.
Cross River State officials view the carnival as a key event to attract tourists not just from Nigeria but from around the world. The event has become a symbol of cultural pride, fostering community spirit and showcasing the vibrant traditions of the nation during this festive season.
