In brief
A British tourist has lost his life after an accident while trekking with a friend in the challenging Himalayan terrain in northern India. Local rescue teams reported difficulties during the rescue operation that lasted for nearly 24 hours.
The incident occurred near the village of Thathri in Dharamshala, where the two men were navigating a steep and rugged hiking route known as the Triund trek, approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long. According to local emergency services, while descending, one of the trekkers suffered critical injuries, prompting his friend to seek immediate assistance from a neighboring village. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Response Force received the distress call at 6 PM on Sunday and dispatched a team of ten rescuers to the scene. After a challenging four-hour trek, they located the injured man around 10:30 PM. The rescue team then secured the critically injured trekker onto a stretcher, beginning the arduous descent in tough terrain, characterized by steep slopes and challenging stream crossings.Because of the intricate landscape and difficult conditions, the team struggled to cover just 100 meters in nearly two hours. Overnight, as the situation warranted, additional rescuers were called in to assist with the transport of the injured man.On Monday afternoon, the trekker was finally brought down from the mountain and reached the hospital at approximately 5:08 PM, but unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival. Fortunately, his friend emerged unscathed from the ordeal. Reports indicate the local authorities had implemented a temporary ban on trekking in high-altitude regions, but it seems the pair was unaware of this restriction and had reached the snowline—the point beyond which snow persists year-round. The victim's identity has yet to be confirmed, and the British Foreign Office has expressed support for the deceased’s family while engaging with local authorities.
