In brief
Notre-Dame cathedral has undergone an extensive restoration, showcasing stunning features such as a newly reconstructed spire, revitalized stained glass, and cleaned stonework. French President Emmanuel Macron provided a first look inside, highlighting the architectural and artistic efforts undertaken to restore this iconic landmark.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently showcased the revitalized Notre-Dame Cathedral during a live televised tour, marking the first opportunity for the public to see the interior since the devastating fire in 2019. The restoration efforts extend beyond simple repairs; they represent a comprehensive transformation of the historic structure, removing layers of grime accumulated over the years alongside soot from the fire. One of the most prominent changes is the reintroduction of the spire, which collapsed during the blaze. Initially dismantled in the 18th century, the original structure had been replaced with a neo-Gothic design crafted by architect Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc. The new spire, completed with a traditional wooden base, was carefully lifted into place using Europe’s tallest crane and is finished with a gilded cock atop containing holy relics. The cathedral's façade now gleams with the brightness of freshly cleaned limestone. Restoration experts sourced replacement stones from northern France, meticulously identifying the origin of existing masonry through the examination of unique fossil patterns. Following significant cleaning efforts—40,000 square meters of stone were restored—traditional masonry skills were revived to rebuild the vaulted ceiling supporting the spire. The original wooden roof, which succumbed to the flames, required an incredible effort to replace it accurately—1,200 oak trees were sourced, echoing the craftsmanship of the 13th century. Meanwhile, exterior sculptures, notably the famous gargoyles and chimaeras, were painstakingly restored in a dedicated workshop.Much of the cathedral’s interior has also regained its former vibrancy. Stained glass windows, once dull and grimy, have been revitalized to reveal their explosive colors—a sight enhanced by the pristine stonework surrounding them. Additionally, the cathedral's renowned great organ, unharmed by flames, has undergone extensive cleaning and tuning, ensuring that its 7,952 pipes are ready for use.The altar and other liturgical elements were reconstructed in contemporary yet respectful designs, and archaeologists uncovered significant historical relics during renovation, including a 13th-century rood screen and remains of famous poet Joachim du Bellay.Although the restoration of Notre-Dame has achieved remarkable milestones, ongoing work remains needed, including addressing exterior wall treatments and plans for a museum to honor its rich history. A renewed flair and dedication to the preservation of heritage mark Notre-Dame's future as it prepares to welcome visitors once again.
