A collision between two high‑speed trains near Urda station in Toledo province killed at least 50 people and injured 179, according to Xinhua. The accident involved a Renfe train striking a stationary Iryo carriage, leading to a suspension of services on the line and a statement of condolences from Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Xinhua reported that on Wednesday morning, 28 October 2026, a high‑speed train crash near Urda station in Toledo province, about 120 km south of Madrid, killed at least 50 people and injured 179. The incident involved a Renfe state‑owned train that struck the rear of a stationary private Iryo train, derailing two carriages and sending them down an embankment.

The crash prompted the Spanish railway infrastructure operator Adif to suspend all rail services between Madrid and Andalusia as emergency crews responded to the scene. According to Xinhua, the interruption will last until the track and signalling systems have been fully inspected and cleared.

Chinese embassy officials confirmed that four Chinese nationals were aboard the trains at the time of the collision, with at least one sustaining a minor injury, as reported by Xinhua.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock at the accident on social media, writing on the platform "Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo," according to Xinhua. He added that emergency services were on the ground to assist those affected.

Political parties across Spain cancelled scheduled activities on Wednesday in a show of solidarity with the victims and the families of those who lost their lives, as noted by Xinhua.
