The disaster struck Dharali village, a popular tourist locale known for its hotels and restaurants, around 13:30 IST, resulting in floodwaters surging down from the Kheerganga River, initiating a fast-paced deluge that ravaged the area.
Eyewitness accounts, shared through social media, depict a harrowing scene with torrents of muddy water inundating buildings and roads. Residents of nearby villages, capturing footage of the chaotic flood, can be heard urging others to "run" while panic ensued. Current estimates suggest that many individuals are potentially trapped under wreckage as rescue teams, including army and paramilitary units, arrive to provide aid.
The flooding has also affected the historic Kalpkedar temple, which is reported to be submerged under the rising debris. Notably, the floodwaters have obstructed part of the Bhagirathi River, creating an artificial lake, posing an imminent threat to settlements downstream if not promptly addressed.
