In brief

The Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj attracts millions of pilgrims from around the globe to witness the sacred rituals along the confluence of holy rivers.

In a spectacular display of faith, millions of pilgrims have convened in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to partake in the Mahakumbh Mela, heralded as the world’s largest religious gathering. As the festival unfolds over the next six weeks, devout Hindus from various corners of the globe will flow into the city, aiming to bathe at the Sangam—the holy confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The act of taking a dip in these sacred waters is believed to absolve individuals of their sins, reinforcing the spiritual significance of the event. To manage the influx, authorities have established an extensive tent city stretching across a staggering 4,000 hectares along the riverbanks. The vibrant atmosphere is accentuated by colorful processions where participants sing and dance in homage to their faith. With an expected turnout of around 400 million pilgrims over the 45-day event, preparations have been meticulous to create welcoming spaces for the influx of visitors. Photojournalist Ankit Srinivas captures the sights of this unprecedented gathering, highlighting the diverse mix of participants—from families to sadhus (holy men) performing time-honored rituals. Many pilgrims brave the frigid temperatures to uphold the age-old traditions, with some of the more striking elements being the Naga sadhus, ascetics known for their uniqueness, who immerse themselves in the cold waters. Construction of the extensive tent city has been ongoing since September of the previous year, ensuring a safe space for all who wish to engage in this spiritual odyssey. The grand celebration is set to culminate on February 26, marking the end of weeks steeped in devotion and renewal. As moments of spirituality unfold at the Kumbh Mela, the blend of fervent faith, cultural infusion, and the human drive to seek connection remains a poignant hallmark of this massive event.
