In brief
Recent reports confirm seven additional malnutrition deaths in Gaza, bringing the total since the war began to 154. The conflict continues to escalate, with deadly incidents occurring at aid distribution sites and rising tensions over international recognition of a Palestinian state.
Seven more individuals have succumbed to malnutrition in Gaza over the past 24 hours, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry. This tragic figure has raised the total number of malnutrition-related fatalities to 154 since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in 2023, with a significant portion being 89 children. On Tuesday, global food security experts backed by the UN suggested that the dire consequences of famine are currently unfolding in Gaza. However, Israel asserts it is not implementing restrictions on aid reaching the region, a stance that has drawn skepticism from European allies, the UN, and various organizations active in Gaza. In a related development, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to travel to Israel on Thursday to address the escalating crisis. Reports from Gaza hospitals indicate six Palestinians were killed near a Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution center in Rafah on Wednesday. Eyewitnesses alleged that crowds seeking aid were fired upon by an Israeli tank as they attempted to enter the center shortly before it opened, although the GHF has denied that any killings occurred on its premises that day. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) contended that they issued warnings to a crowd they deemed a threat before firing warning shots at a safe distance from the center. Fatal incidents near GHF sites have become increasingly common, with accusations of the Israeli military targeting aid seekers leading to rising tensions. The Hamas-run health ministry later claimed that 103 individuals were killed in just 24 hours, including 60 seeking aid. Once a total blockade on aid supplies was imposed in early March, Israel resumed military operations against Hamas, leading to further suffering in the region. Despite easing the blockade temporarily amid warnings from global entities about famine threats, shortages have only deepened. Israel's offensive began as a response to a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 individuals and 251 taken hostage. The Hamas authorities estimate that a staggering 60,138 people have died due to the ongoing Israeli military campaign.Additionally, the conflict has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responding angrily to British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's recent commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state by September, contingent upon a ceasefire and progress towards a two-state resolution. Starmer's remarks were criticized by former hostages, such as Emily Damari, who cautioned against rewarding terrorism.
