Ukraine and Russia Trade Accusations Over Easter Ceasefire Violations
In a tense Easter ceasefire, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged serious accusations of ceasefire violations. The Ukrainian military reported on Sunday morning that Russian forces had committed a staggering 2,299 violations since the truce began on Saturday at 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT), including an incident where they shot four unarmed Ukrainian soldiers.
In response, Russia's defense ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces had committed 1,971 violations, including three attempted counter-attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The accusations indicate a significant escalation in hostilities, undermining the fragile ceasefire meant to coincide with the Orthodox Easter celebrations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces would respond "symmetrically" to any attacks during the ceasefire, describing Easter as "a time of peace". He expressed hopes that the ceasefire could be extended to facilitate stalled peace negotiations; however, Russia swiftly rejected the notion, asserting that attacks would resume on Monday.
Despite the ceasefire, Ukrainian military reports indicated that Russian troops mounted 28 attacks and conducted nearly 2,000 drone strikes, although they refrained from deploying bombs or missiles. Furthermore, Russian forces in the Kharkiv region executed four Ukrainian soldiers shortly after the ceasefire commenced, an act condemned as a "grave violation of international humanitarian law".
Additionally, a Russian drone strike in Ukraine's northern Sumy region resulted in injuries to three medics as it hit an ambulance overnight. Ukraine has also alleged that Russian troops thwarted several attempts to advance by its forces in Sumy and Donetsk.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the Easter ceasefire, having previously resisted calls from Ukraine for a temporary cessation of fighting. The truce came amidst ongoing discussions regarding potential peace negotiations, but both sides have expressed low expectations regarding the effectiveness of the ceasefire, indicating the conflict remains entrenched.
This serious exchange of accusations and ongoing military activities highlights the complexities and fragility of peace efforts as the war in Ukraine continues to impact civilians and soldiers alike.
