In brief

The Kyiv military intensifies its logistics blockade of occupied Crimea by striking dozens of Russian fuel tankers in the Sea of Azov. Drone operator Robert Brovdi reports at least 36 hits, severely impacting Russia’s naval logistics and fueling shortages across the country. The attacks, combined with Russian refinery raids, amplify a war‑fuel crisis that has hit over 90% of Russian regions, sparking protests and calls for more decisive action.

Ukraine’s unmanned‑systems command has intensified operations around the Russian‑annexed Crimea by striking a series of fuel‑laden tankers in the Sea of Azov. Chief drone commander Robert Brovdi, known as Magyar, says the forces hit roughly 36 ships over the past five days, with most belonging to Russia’s commercial “shadow fleet.” These hits have crippled naval logistics and disrupted the flow of diesel to the peninsula.

The attacks were visible as separate night‑time footage shared on social media and confirmed by satellite imagery. One plume of smoke, observed from a satellite on 6 July, is thought to be the result of the first wave of strikes. The footage also shows multiple vessels departing for the Black Sea, only to be intercepted again later.

The strike wave coincides with intensified Russian refinery raids across the country, leaving Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as more than 90% of Russia’s other regions, facing fuel shortages. President Zelensky has framed the strategy as a counter‑blow to Russian strikes, urging Russian citizens to experience the cost of warfare.

The Ukrainian drone attacks are part of a so‑called logistics lockdown aimed at choking supplies to Crimea. The campaign has already cost the Black Sea fleet a significant opportunity to defend the peninsula's coastal infrastructure. Russian sources report that tankers attacked in Taganrog Bay carried nearly 7,000 t of fuel each, and that the attacks reached a peak with 12 tankers hit on a single night.

With the Black Sea Fleet effectively shut in at Novorossiysk, the Ukraine military’s targeting of maritime routes has become a “shooting gallery” for Ukrainian drones, threatening Russian fuel supplies and infrastructure critical to the war effort.
