WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is announcing a new initiative for foreigners traveling to the U.S. for the World Cup next year that will allow them to get interviews for visas more quickly. Dubbed 'FIFA Pass,' it will allow those who have purchased World Cup tickets through FIFA to get expedited visa appointments, as the administration continues to balance President Donald Trump’s tough-on-migration stance with an influx of global travelers for the soccer tournament. The 'pass' stands for 'prioritized appointments scheduling system.' 'If you have a ticket for the World Cup, you can have prioritized appointments to get your visa,' said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who discussed the new system with Trump. Trump emphasized the importance of applying for visas promptly, urging World Cup travelers to do so 'right away.' Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that the administration has sent over 400 additional consular officers worldwide to meet visa demand, asserting that travelers can typically secure an appointment within 60 days in about 80% of the globe. The FIFA Pass system will allow ticket holders to access a special 'FIFA portal' for prioritized processing of their visa applications and interviews. While vetting standards will remain stringent, this initiative is positioned as a means to facilitate a successful World Cup. During the tournament, a total of 104 matches will occur across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Trump expressed concerns about the safety of certain host cities, including Seattle, which recently elected a progressive mayor. 'If we think there’s gonna be signs of trouble, I would ask Gianni to move that to a different city,' he stated, further underscoring the priority of safety for the World Cup’s success.
