In brief
On Tuesday, a "very large" avalanche swept through the French Alps, tragically taking the life of a 55-year-old skier at Les Grands Montets. The dual Brazilian-Portuguese national's body was recovered following the avalanche, which measured 1km in length and 400m in width. The incident took place around 16:35 local time (15:35 GMT) in an off-piste area, where ski patrol was already on site to close off the hazardous conditions. Initial reports had mistakenly identified the victim as British, but local authorities rectified this information on Wednesday. Rescuers confirmed no additional casualties, while the Haute-Savoie prefecture urged skiers to heed safety warnings amid a high avalanche risk this January.
