President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States will launch an investigation into the European Union following a €890 million fine imposed on Google for allegedly favoring its apps over competitors.
Trump warned that any fines levied on American technology firms—Apple, Meta and Amazon—should be reversed, and hinted at a potential “substantial tariff” against the EU.
The post also cites the President’s intention to initiate a 301 trade investigation, saying European regulators “robbed” American companies and taxpayers.
While the original fine was a result of the Digital Markets Act, Trump’s claim of $15 billion in Apple fines, $3 billion for Meta and $2.5 billion for Amazon are unverified.
The administration’s threat comes after Trump last month threatened a 100 % tariff on EU nations that enforce digital services taxes, a move that could reshape the tech trade landscape.
