Tragic Shooting Incident in Kyiv Claims Six Lives
At least six people have been killed and several others injured after a person opened fire in Kyiv on Saturday, Ukrainian officials say.
The incident occurred in the southern Holosiivskyi district. Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the shooter, a local resident, began shooting at people on the street before taking hostages in a nearby supermarket.
The assailant was killed during a shoot-out with police, while the exact motive behind his actions remains unclear.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that at least 14 people were injured, including a 12-year-old boy. Four individuals were shot on the street, while a woman, believed to be in her 30s, succumbed to her injuries later in hospital. The gunman also killed one of the hostages.
Negotiators engaged with the shooter for approximately 40 minutes in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Klymenko indicated that the man was acting chaotically and did not make any demands.
We offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond. As a result, the order was given to eliminate him, especially after he killed one of the hostages, Klymenko explained.
Eventually, four hostages were freed following the incident. Ukraine's prosecutor general identified the shooter as a 58-year-old man from Moscow who employed an automatic weapon in the attack.
The firearm used was officially registered, and investigations into how the permit was issued, as well as the circumstances of the shooting itself, are ongoing.
Zelensky revealed that the shooter had resided in the eastern Donetsk region, known for its unresolved conflict due to Russian occupation. Additionally, it was noted that the assailant set fire to his apartment prior to launching the shooting spree.
While Kyiv frequently faces attacks during the ongoing war with Russia, incidents of such gun violence are relatively rare in the city.
