Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.

The Oakland Police Department stated that the former American football star, who spent most of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died after being involved in an alleged home break-in and a struggle with officers on Saturday.

While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued, the department noted, adding that Martin became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His family reported that his cause of death is still unconfirmed.

It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning, a family spokesperson stated. His family requested privacy at this time.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. They highlighted his impactful tenure with the team, which included a record-setting rookie season in 2012 and multiple Pro Bowl selections.

Born in Oakland, California, Martin was drafted by the Buccaneers as a first-round pick in 2012. During that rookie season, he rushed for 1,454 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He was affectionately dubbed the Muscle Hamster due to his strong build at just 5ft 9in tall.

Despite his talent, Martin faced challenges with injuries and a four-game suspension in 2016 for violating the NFL's drug policy. He later sought treatment for his issues. Martin's last NFL season was with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
