In brief

Didier Dubreucq, sentenced for his role in the high-profile jewelry theft from Kim Kardashian, died from lung cancer just a month after his conviction. His absence in court during sentencing was attributed to his ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

One of the infamous "grandpa robbers" implicated in the high-profile jewelry theft from reality TV star Kim Kardashian has died just one month after being convicted. Didier Dubreucq, aged 69, passed away from lung cancer, a condition he had been battling while in custody prior to his trial, as reported by French media. In May, Dubreucq and seven others were found guilty of a brazen robbery that took place nearly a decade ago in Paris, during which millions of dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from Kardashian. Throughout the trial, Dubreucq maintained his innocence, claiming he was misidentified. "It's a mistaken identity case... I had nothing to do with this," he told the court during his testimony in April.Due to health concerns related to his chemotherapy, Dubreucq, who was referred to as "Blue Eyes," did not attend his sentencing hearing. He received a seven-year prison term, with five years suspended, but he was not required to serve additional time since he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention. Other members of the gang received sentences of up to eight years as well, also being spared incarceration due to time served, as confirmed by Judge David De Pas.During the dramatic three-week trial, Kardashian recounted her harrowing experience, revealing that the thieves had bound her and held a gun to her head during the incident. "I thought I would be shot dead on the bed," she recalled. The robbery gang, composed of older men, stole approximately $10 million worth of her jewelry, including a $4 million engagement ring gifted by her then-husband Kanye West.Following the verdict, Kardashian described the robbery as "the most terrifying experience of my life," emphasizing the lasting impact it had on her and her family.
