LOS ANGELES (PulseWire) — A powerful winter storm has swept across Southern California, bringing significant rain that has begun to taper off, but forecasters warn of another storm system expected to bring showers and potential thunderstorms on Christmas Day.
This winter storm has caused heavy rainfall in areas previously impacted by wildfires, fueling concerns over flash flooding and mudslides. Residents in burn scar zones have been issued evacuation orders as the risk of debris flows increases with the saturated landscape.
Firefighters responded to multiple emergency situations, including rescuing individuals trapped in vehicles due to mudslides that blocked roads. In one instance, residents in Wrightwood, a community in the San Gabriel Mountains, faced significant challenges as the heavy rains washed out roads and cut off access to necessities.
“Half the families are here, and half the families are on the other side of the creek,” said local resident Travis Guenther, addressing the severe conditions that have left many stranded. Community support emerged as neighbors rallied around those in need, delivering food and supplies to families cut off from grocery stores due to blocked roads.
Despite the difficulties, local camaraderie has shone through, with a resident gathering supplies for those stuck at home, underscoring the spirit of generosity in the face of adversity.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Warnings
The storm's effects were seen across various counties, leading to evacuation mandates in specific areas near the burn scars from previous wildfires, such as the Airport Fire in Orange County. Unexpected weather conditions contributed to hazardous travel, prompting road closures, including parts of Interstate 5.
In a bid to manage the ongoing crisis, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for several counties to mobilize state resources effectively. The state is deploying emergency services, with the National Guard on standby to assist local authorities.
As Southern California braces for more rain during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, residents are urged to stay vigilant regarding potential flooding and prepare for further disruptions.
