WASHINGTON (PulseWire.news) – A bipartisan coalition of U.S. senators is calling for an investigation into the Justice Department's handling of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The group, which includes twelve senators, emphasizes that victims 'deserve full disclosure' regarding the details surrounding Epstein and his confidant, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska led a letter to Acting Inspector General Don Berthiaume, urging an audit of the Justice Department's compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. This legislation was enacted last month, mandating the government to open its files related to Epstein.
Murkowski, along with Democrats such as Richard Blumenthal and Jeff Merkley, expressed concern over the Trump administration's previous resistance to transparency in Epstein's case. They argue that an objective review is vital to uncovering those who facilitated Epstein's crimes.
Meanwhile, Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, also a supporter of the transparency act, criticized the Department, claiming it violated the law by unnecessarily redacting documents and missing the deadline for their release.
Despite the deadline, the Justice Department indicated that it plans to continue releasing records in batches, attributing the delays to the complexities involved in protecting the identities of victims. Records released thus far, including testimony and correspondence, have often been heavily redacted, frustrating advocates and lawmakers alike.
In light of these developments, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced a resolution calling for the Senate to consider legal action to enforce compliance with disclosure requirements.
