SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rep. Eric Swalwell’s campaign for California governor faces a significant backlash as he has lost support from prominent political allies following allegations of sexual assault. Key supporters, including U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, have called for Swalwell to suspend his gubernatorial run on the heels of serious accusations regarding sexual misconduct involving a former staff member.

Swalwell, who has been a leading contender to succeed outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom, has publicly denied the allegations, asserting their falsehood. 'These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They’re absolutely false. They did not happen, they have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have,' he stated on social media.

Following the release of the allegations, prominent political figures—including respected labor unions—have rescinded their endorsements. The California Federation of Labor stated it would act urgently on next steps, signaling a collective concern about the implications of the allegations on the party's future in the gubernatorial race.

California's political landscape has become increasingly hostile for Swalwell as he navigates this crisis. With voters set to receive mail-in ballots next month for the June 2 election, the pressure mounts for immediate actions amid calls from other candidates for him to step down.

The allegations, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, include claims from an unnamed woman who accused Swalwell of assaulting her during two separate incidents. The first occurred while she was employed by him in 2019, with another alleged incident reported to have taken place following a charity gala in 2024. The alleged victim expressed her fear of going to the police, citing concerns over not being believed.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while not endorsing a candidate, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the serious allegations against Swalwell, suggesting the inquiry be conducted separate from the gubernatorial race.

As calls for accountability grow, Swalwell has been reminded of the precarious nature of his candidacy and the potential impacts on the Democratic Party's standing in California.

The unfolding situation has created significant chaos within California’s already crowded Democratic primary, prompting worries among party leaders about the risk of losing crucial electoral ground in the upcoming general election.
