In brief

In a devastating turn of events, torrential rainfall has resulted in significant flooding in Kinshasa, causing at least 33 deaths and leaving thousands in peril. The government is mobilizing rescue efforts amidst widespread destruction and rising water levels.

Dozens of lives have been lost as torrential rains battered Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, leading to catastrophic flooding. Officials report that at least 33 individuals perished as a result of the severe weather. President Félix Tshisekedi extended his condolences to victims, assuring them that the government would not abandon them, and convened a crisis meeting to address the situation.Residents desperate to escape the floodwaters have resorted to wading, swimming, or using makeshift canoes for safety. Kinshasa, a bustling metropolis of 17 million people located alongside the vast Congo River, is no stranger to flooding. However, this incident has been exacerbated by the river reaching its highest levels in six decades. As a result, multiple neighborhoods, especially in the outskirts and poorer areas of the city, have faced severe destruction due to overnight flooding from Friday to Saturday.According to local reports, approximately half of Kinshasa's 26 districts are grappling with the aftermath, with search and rescue teams deployed to aid those trapped. One resident from Ndanu expressed his grief, stating, "The water has reached 1.5 metres high. We have just managed to save ourselves; the rest is trapped in our homes." Amidst the devastation, many residents have voiced frustration over the delayed response from local authorities and insufficient assistance. In addition to loss of life and property, the floods have triggered significant water shortages due to the inundation of the city's treatment pumps. Some critical routes, including the main road connecting the city center to the international airport, remain impassable. One of Kinshasa's tributaries, the N'djili river, has also overflowed, leaving communities cut off and vulnerable. The National Meteorological Agency warns of more expected rainfall in the coming weeks, particularly in Kinshasa and Goma, which recently fell under rebel control. The persistent flooding issue reflects broader challenges including deficient sewage management, poor infrastructure, and inadequate urban planning, for which the government pledged solutions last year.As the situation develops, many in Kinshasa remain vigilant, fearing additional rainfall and its potential consequences for a city already grappling with overwhelming conditions.
