In brief

A female traveler from Uganda has been confirmed as Nigeria’s first Ebola case linked to the current East African outbreak. The patient, a diplomat’s wife, was admitted to a hospital in Abuja and is now isolated. Health authorities have identified 44 close contacts and launched a contact‑tracing operation. Nigeria, which survived a 2014 outbreak, urges calm and vigilance. The case highlights the virus’s cross‑regional spread and the importance of rapid response.

Nigeria confirms a case of Ebola that traces back to East Africa

A female traveler from Uganda was diagnosed with Ebola after developing symptoms in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The patient, the wife of a diplomat, is not a Nigerian citizen and is now isolated in a hospital’s special ward. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate confirmed that laboratory tests verified the diagnosis.

First‑responders have already identified 44 close contacts of the patient and have begun intensive contact‑tracing to prevent further spread. “The location of exposure remains under investigation,” added Uganda’s Director General of Health Services, Charles Olaro. “We presume it was likely picked up in Uganda,” said Pate on the national broadcaster NTA.

Despite Uganda declaring itself free of Ebola in August, the current West African case underscores the virus’s ability to bypass borders. It also marks Nigeria’s first Ebola case related to the ongoing East African outbreak, following the outbreak that began in May in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health authorities advise the public to remain calm, practice regular handwashing and sanitising, and cooperate with health officials conducting contact tracing. Travellers from countries with active Ebola transmission may be required to complete a health declaration form upon arrival, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
