Police responded to Brinell School in Fagersta at 14:00 local time Thursday reporting a deadly sword attack. An 18‑year‑old suspect was arrested after being shot by authorities. Two teenage students were seriously wounded and another suffered minor injuries. Eight surrounding schools were temporarily locked down, the state of high alert was declared, and the incident has prompted a review of weapons access. Police in central Sweden declared a fatal incident following a sword assault at Brinell School in Fagersta. The high‑school was hit by an 18‑year‑old suspect who wields a sabre, leading to the death of a teacher and multiple injuries among students.

The cops were called at 14:00 local time (13:00 BST) on Thursday. After arriving, officers shot the teenager before arresting and detaining him, according to a police update released later that day. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was reportedly wearing a helmet and was a former pupil of the school.

The attack left two teenage boys in critical condition and another person with minor injuries. In response, eight schools nearby were placed under lockdown – a measure that has since been lifted – and the Västmanland region entered a state of high alert. Police are probing possible motives but have confirmed there is currently no further threat to the public.

The incident unfolded shortly after students had returned from summer break. Brinell, a school hosting just under 500 students, is located about 170km (105 miles) northwest of Stockholm. The new term was set to begin this week, either on Monday or Wednesday, depending on the academic calendar.

This attack follows a string of violent incidents at Swedish educational institutions. In 2025, a mass shooting at an adult education centre in Örebro resulted in 11 deaths; the subsequent tightening of gun laws tied to the gun owner’s possession of rifles was a response. Earlier, in 2022, an 18‑year‑old student fired a gun at a Malmö school killing two teachers, and in 2015 a sword attack in Trollhättan killed a teacher and a student.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the incident a "serious event" in a post on X and vowed extensive police investigation. King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his dismay and sadness, offering condolences to all affected. The community remains on edge as authorities work to understand the catalyst behind this tragic event.
