A private jet carrying Liberian President Joseph Boakai encountered a serious incident upon landing at Roberts International Airport (RIA) on Thursday night, leading to temporary disruptions in air traffic and raising widespread alarm. Reports indicate that one of the aircraft's landing gear components malfunctioned, resulting in a rough landing as the president was returning from a trip to Nigeria.
The chaotic scene unfolded as airport authorities reported a burst tire, which left the presidential jet stranded on the runway. Fortunately, President Boakai and his entourage were unharmed during the harrowing experience, and he was safely evacuated. Eyewitness accounts spotlighted the tense atmosphere at the airport as flights were canceled in the wake of the incident, heightening concerns about safety protocols.
In light of the incident, the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) issued a statement describing the situation as an "unfortunate near-accident." They aimed to quell rumors by assuring the public that runway conditions met international safety standards and were not to blame for the scare. Following the successful removal of the aircraft, operations resumed at RIA, with ongoing investigations launched to determine the causes of the malfunction.
While the Liberian presidency has thus far remained silent on the incident, they did share images of President Boakai's arrival at the airport. During a brief engagement with reporters, he did not address the tense landing experience. The president had been in Nigeria for the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).
As investigations continue, the public remains on alert, looking for updates regarding the safety of air travel in Liberia.
