There are no plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin in the immediate future, a White House official has stated.
Last Thursday Trump mentioned that he and the Russian president would hold discussions in Budapest within two weeks to talk about the ongoing war in Ukraine.
A preparatory meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was expected to take place this week. However, the White House conveyed that the two had a productive call, which rendered the meeting unnecessary.
The White House did not provide additional details on the reasons for the postponement of talks.
On Monday, Trump endorsed the idea of freezing the Ukrainian conflict along the current front line, stating, Let it be cut the way it is, in reference to the contested Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
Russia, however, has opposed the notion of freezing the fronts, with Lavrov asserting that Moscow is seeking long-term, sustainable peace rather than a temporary ceasefire.
