Nepal Swears in Former Rapper Balendra Shah as Prime Minister
Rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah has been sworn in as Nepal's prime minister after a landslide victory in the country's first election since last year's youth-led protests against the ruling elites. The 35-year-old's ascent to power marks a pivotal change in Nepali politics, signaling a breaking away from corruption and nepotism.
Shah, popularly known as Balen, garnered significant public support due to his promises of change during his campaign. His recent track, emphasizing unity and optimism for Nepal's future, resonated deeply with a populace disillusioned by the old guard. Undivided Nepali, this time history is being made, he rapped, gaining over two million views shortly after its release.
After a successful tenure as the Mayor of Kathmandu, Shah joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to run for Prime Minister, defeating long-standing political figures, including former PM KP Sharma Oli.
Shah's musical background influenced his political approach, employing social media as a tool to communicate his message of anti-corruption and job creation. His victory was seen as a major upset against the entrenched political power structure, reflecting the desires of younger voters for meaningful change.
However, some concerns linger regarding Shah's past as mayor, where allegations of heavy-handedness against street vendors raised questions about his governance style. Rights groups and citizens alike are eager to witness how Shah will manage the pressures of high expectations, economic challenges, and the continuing need for judicial reforms.
