In brief
The heist, involving nearly $9 million in stolen jewelry, has raised major concerns about tourist safety and criminal activity in the city.
In a highly publicized trial that began on Monday in Paris, ten members associated with the so-called "grandpa robbers" face serious charges related to the dramatic robbery of Kim Kardashian nearly nine years ago. This infamous incident occurred in October 2016 during Paris Fashion Week when Kardashian was brutally attacked at a residence she had rented.Authorities claim that the group, comprised of older criminals in their 70s, executed a well-planned assault wherein Kardashian was tied up and held at gunpoint while jewels valued at around 8 million euros (nearly $9 million) were stolen. The perpetrators, donning police uniforms and balaclavas, broke into her luxury apartment, terrorizing both Kardashian and a night watchman who was coerced into assisting them. The shocking event not only stole valuables but also instigated widespread fears regarding the safety of tourists in Paris, a city already reeling from previous terrorist attacks. The brazen nature of the crime and the circumstances surrounding it captured international headlines and intensified scrutiny on the city's security for visitors.Despite a thorough investigation, most of the jewelry has yet to be recovered. However, police did manage to collect DNA evidence from the zip ties used to restrain Kardashian, which eventually led to multiple arrests approximately three months after the heist. Prosecutors indicated that many of the suspects had extensive criminal backgrounds. The trial is poised to expose the details of the crime and the legal proceedings against those implicated.
