Rapper Tory Lanez has been hospitalized following a stabbing incident at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, roughly 75 miles north of Los Angeles. The attack occurred on Tuesday morning when another inmate assaulted Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Speaking to the media, Pedro Calderón Michel from the state's corrections department reported that prison staff responded swiftly to the incident by activating 911 and providing medical assistance. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was subsequently transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Although specific details about his condition have not been disclosed, initial reports assert that his injuries are non-life threatening.
An investigation into the stabbing is currently being conducted. The incident unfolded at approximately 07:20 local time (15:20 GMT), and while the motives behind the attack remain unclear, it has raised concerns within the prison community. Lanez's conviction stems from a 2020 incident where he shot Megan Thee Stallion, inciting a controversial trial that captured public attention.
The incident escalated during an argument after a pool party at celebrity Kylie Jenner's home, where Lanez was accused of firing shots in the air while demanding Megan to "dance." The shooting left Megan injured, requiring surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot. Despite maintaining his innocence and refusing to apologize, the case has polarized the hip-hop community, with various artists voicing their opinions on the controversy surrounding it.
Lanez has released several successful albums before his incarceration and has hinted at a new album titled "Peterson" during his time in prison. The ramifications of the prison attack on his career and legal situation remain to be seen.
