On Sunday morning around 4:30 AM local time, a joyous wedding celebration in the small village of Goult turned deadly when masked gunmen attacked the newlyweds as they were departing the venue. Local officials reported that the 27-year-old bride was killed in the attack, while her 25-year-old groom and a 13-year-old child suffered serious injuries. Additionally, a woman sustained minor injuries during the chaotic incident.
Authorities have launched a manhunt involving a significant police presence and aerial surveillance to apprehend the suspects who managed to escape the scene. Initial investigations suggest that the violent episode may be linked to drug-related disputes, prompting the local government to initiate a murder and attempted murder probe.
The mayor of Goult, Didier Perello, expressed deep shock and anger over the incident, emphasizing the serenity of the village and lamenting that such violent acts have marred its reputation. He revealed that the venue had been rented months prior for the celebration by individuals residing outside of Goult, further highlighting the unexpected nature of the crime in this close-knit community.
Witnesses reported that approximately 28 guests were at the wedding hall during the shooting. Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the fate of one attacker, with prosecutor Florence Galtier confirming that at least one gunman was killed in an exchange of fire, while others fled on foot after abandoning their vehicle.
Villager Guillaume Molinas remarked on the somber impact this event would have on a community that has not witnessed such turmoil for over a century. The shocking events from the wedding night continue to unfold as families mourn, and investigators strive to unravel the circumstances surrounding this horrific act.
