KPop Demon Hunters Directors Talk Oscars and Sequel Prospects
Maggie Kang, the creator and co-director of Kpop Demon Hunters, has said she is excited for the potential for more stories involving animated girl group Huntr/x.
During a recent interview with the BBC, Kang expressed that while there are nothing official we can talk about, she and co-director Chris Appelhans believe there’s definitely more we can do with these characters in this world.
Kpop Demon Hunters has quickly become a cultural sensation this year, surpassing Squid Game to become the most-watched title in Netflix history, with over 325 million views.
The animated film follows a female Kpop trio engaged in saving the world while performing, battling against a demon boy band known as Saja Boys. The film's success has rewritten records, including having a sing-along version top the US box office.
There is growing speculation about Kpop Demon Hunters’ chances at the Oscars, with a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 95%. Gold Derby predicts it as a frontrunner for the Best Animated Feature award, overshadowing contenders like Zootopia 2.
Directors Kang and Appelhans shared their thoughts on the film's music, which has also topped charts with multiple songs. They hinted at potential Oscar nominations for standout tracks, including the film’s anthem, 'Golden.'
While both directors ruled out a live-action adaptation, they affirmed their pride in the animated style that allows for dynamic storytelling. Despite the ongoing awards conversation, they reflect positively on the film’s ability to connect audiences with Kpop culture and each other.
