SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A federal judge ordered the release of a 5-year-old boy and his father on Saturday from a Texas detention center where they were held after their recent detention in a Minneapolis suburb.

Photos of Liam Conejo Ramos wearing a bunny hat and Spiderman backpack as he was surrounded by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents triggered significant backlash against the immigration policies of President Donald Trump. This public outcry led to protests at the detention facility and the involvement of two Texas Democratic Congress members who visited the site on Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, criticized the government's practices, noting, the case has its genesis in the ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatizing children.

Previously, the court had ruled that the boy and his father could not be removed from the U.S. for the time being.

Witnesses claim that federal immigration agents in Minnesota used Liam as 'bait' by instructing him to knock on his own front door to lure his mother outside. However, the Department of Homeland Security vehemently denied these claims, calling them an “abject lie,” stating that the father managed to flee on foot, leaving the child in a running vehicle.

During a recent visit with Representatives Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett, Liam was observed sleeping in his father’s arms. Adrian Conejo Arias reported that Liam was often tired and had poor appetite while detained in the facility that houses around 1,100 individuals.

Reports have surfaced depicting substandard conditions within the detention center, including instances of contaminated food and inadequate medical care. A report from ICE itself revealed that nearly 400 children were held beyond the recommended limit of 20 days, ringing alarm bells regarding the treatment of detained families.
