In brief

A powerful earthquake struck Tibet's Shigatse city on Tuesday morning, causing significant casualties and widespread destruction.

At 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT), a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, according to the US Geological Survey, rocked the mountainous region of Tibet, China. As reported by Chinese state media, the tremor has resulted in at least 32 fatalities and left 38 injured, with the region's infrastructure severely affected. The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately six miles) and triggered a series of aftershocks in the area.Tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India, though no immediate damage or casualties were reported across the border. Shigatse, known for its rich spiritual significance, is home to the holy seat of the Panchen Lama, one of Tibetan Buddhism's key figures. The impact of the quake has seen more than 1,000 homes reported damaged, prompting emergency responses from local authorities.Chinese officials have reported varying magnitudes, with state media suggesting the quake was 6.8, noting "obvious" tremors. A researcher from the China Earthquake Networks Center, Jiang Haikun, indicated that while aftershocks could follow, the probability of a more substantial earthquake is minimal. In the aftermath, the Chinese air force has mobilized resources, deploying drones to assist recovery efforts while facing severe weather conditions characteristic of the region, such as freezing temperatures. Connectivity to power and water systems has been disrupted, complicating rescue operations. With the earthquake's epicenter situated along a major fault line where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, the region is prone to seismic activity. The 2015 earthquake near Kathmandu serves as a grim reminder of the potential devastation, claiming nearly 9,000 lives and injuring over 20,000.As casualty figures are still being verified, Tibet's earthquake bureau is hopeful to provide clearer assessments soon, while the international community watches closely for updates regarding the impacted area and ongoing relief efforts.
