In a direct appeal on Saturday, Donald Trump announced he has engaged in discussions with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia as hostilities flare between the two nations. The former U.S. president, currently visiting his golf resort in Scotland, took to Truth Social to declare both governments were "committed to an immediate ceasefire" and would collaborate towards achieving "PEACE!" after recent border confrontations that began on July 24.
The ongoing clashes have resulted in at least 33 fatalities, including soldiers and civilians, and have forced thousands of residents in both countries to flee their homes. Trump's comments come as a significant deadline looms; new U.S. tariffs on goods imported from Thailand and Cambodia set to take effect on August 1, with businesses facing a steep 36% tax unless a resolution is reached.
Earlier in the day, Cambodia's leadership echoed calls for an immediate cessation of fighting. Thailand's Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, expressed that efforts for peace talks hinge on Cambodia's sincerity in de-escalating tensions. Following his golfing activity at Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Trump mentioned he had dialogue with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, expressing optimism about forthcoming trade agreements once stability is restored.
