23 August 2026 — France Inter radio conversation: Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari said 301 drownings have occurred since 19 June, a 14% jump from last year, and blamed the hot summer on rising risks.

In the past two months, the heat wave that sweeps across Europe has turned rivers and canals into lethal traps, with many deaths in areas not authorised for swimming or in private pools.

Ferrari, citing “tragic toll,” warned that cold‑water shock can cause instant death when people enter hot‑water bodies “on a sudden immersion.” She added that many older adults were among the victims.

The summer’s crisis is compounded by wildfires that scorched more than 200,000 hectares in the Gironde region, forcing residents into the streets, and by a temporary shutdown of the Golfech nuclear plant after river water temperature climbed past the 28°C safety limit.

The French government is partnering with regional authorities to upgrade swimming sites and tighten safety measures, as recent research shows Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, intensifying heat-driven hazards.
