HONOLULU (AP) — An attempted murder trial is wrapping up for anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, who is accused of trying to kill his wife during a cliff-side hike near a popular scenic lookout in Hawaii. Closing arguments are expected Tuesday.
The trial commenced last month, almost a year after Gerhardt and Arielle Konig went on a hike on the Pali Puka trail in Honolulu. The outing ended with Arielle screaming for help, claiming her husband tried to kill her. Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty.
The couple traveled to Hawaii’s capital for Arielle's birthday in March 2025 while their two young sons remained in Maui. Reports suggest Gerhardt, 47, frustrated by his wife's purported emotional affair with a coworker, attempted to push her off the steep trail, struck her with a rock, and tried to stab her with a syringe.
The trial, which has featured live testimony via Court TV, has uncovered the couple's marital difficulties leading up to the hike.
During his testimony, Gerhardt claimed to have discovered his wife's affair by checking her phone while she slept. Arielle characterized the relationship as an emotional affair filled with flirty texts.
According to Arielle, the altercation began when Gerhardt forced her towards the cliff's edge. In response, she threw herself to the ground to avoid falling. She stated that he had a syringe and that she fought back, using her teeth and grip to escape.
Gerhardt contests that version, asserting that Arielle attacked him first with a rock, prompting him to wrest it away in self-defense.
Two other hikers heard Arielle’s screams and assisted her down the trail, drawing further attention to the incident.
Pali Puka, which translates to 'pierced cliff' in Hawaiian, is a trail closed to hikers due to safety concerns, although many continue to access it, ignoring the warning signs.
In a dramatic turn, Gerhardt testified he contemplated suicide as he observed his wife crawl away, believing both his career and marriage were over. However, he allegedly called his adult son from a previous marriage before surrendering to police, confessing to attempting to kill Arielle, a claim he has since denied.
In the wake of the incident, Arielle has filed for divorce.
