NORTH CODORUS, Pa. (AP) — Law enforcement officials are investigating a devastating shooting that resulted in the deaths of three officers and left two others wounded in southern Pennsylvania. The violence broke out in rural York County on Wednesday during an operation related to a domestic investigation initiated earlier that week, leading to the death of the shooter at the hands of police.
Shortly after the violence, members of the community assembled with American flags to pay tribute as police vehicles escorted the fallen officers' bodies to the coroner’s office.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his sorrow, calling it a tragic loss of life, while Attorney General Pamela Bondi lamented the ongoing violence against police officers, branding it a “scourge on our society.”
This incident marks one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania law enforcement in recent history, recalling events from 2009 when three Pittsburgh officers were fatally ambushed during a domestic disturbance.
Police departments throughout the region shared condolences on social media, while many community members left flowers at the headquarters of the Northern York Regional Police Department, signaling a collective grief.
The investigation will extend across multiple locations in York County, as described in a statement by state police.
According to Dirk Anderson, who lives nearby, he heard a barrage of gunfire and witnessed the arrival of numerous police and emergency vehicles. The confrontation unfolded in a rural setting surrounded by farmland, resulting in police cordoning off various roads as they conducted a thorough response to the attack.
The wounded officers are reported to be in critical but stable condition following treatment at York Hospital. However, authorities have yet to release the identities of the officers killed or the shooter pending the ongoing investigation.
