Umit, an Amur tiger, was released into Kazakhstan’s Ile‑Balkhash Nature Reserve – the first rare tiger in 70 years to be reintroduced into the region. The move is part of a programme to rebuild the species, which was wiped out in Central Asia a century ago.
Umit is one of four tigers transferred from Russia, and scientists will monitor her adaptation before deciding when to release the remaining animals. The relocation is a significant step in the broader effort to restore tiger numbers across Central Asia.
