Experts Challenge U.S. Claims on Iran Missile Strike in Lamerd

In a recent development, multiple weapons experts have publicly disputed a U.S. assertion that Iran was responsible for a deadly missile strike on the town of Lamerd, which resulted in significant civilian casualties. Six independent experts analyzed footage of the April 3 strike and identified several inconsistencies with the U.S. narrative that claimed an Iranian missile was the source of the attack.

Iranian authorities reported that 21 individuals, including four children, lost their lives in the incident. This prompted further scrutiny of the origins of the missile used during the strike. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) had initially suggested that it was an Iranian Hoveyzeh cruise missile, following a previous report by BBC Verify that indicated a U.S. Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) might be responsible.

Despite Centcom's assertion, the experts argued that the characteristics of the munition, as depicted in the footage, do not align with those of the Iranian missile. They noted the missile's distinct visual features, explosion pattern, and trajectory differing significantly from what would be expected from Iranian technology.

Interestingly, BBC Verify's earlier investigations had revealed that the missile's appearance, blast size, and its flight path could point towards it being a PrSM, a state-of-the-art missile produced by Lockheed Martin, designed for high precision warfare.

Centcom dismissed earlier media claims, emphasizing that U.S. forces adhere to strict rules against civilian targeting, and cited their analysis of the missile’s size, trajectory, and features as reasons for their assertion that an Iranian missile was at play.

In response to inquiries regarding the experts' findings, Centcom stated that it had “nothing to add” to its original claim. This lack of elaboration has raised eyebrows as it may indicate a reluctance to engage in what could be a lengthy and complex debate over missile capabilities and occurrences amidst rising military tension in the Middle East.

As the situation unfolds, further investigation will be crucial in establishing the facts surrounding the Lamerd strike and the broader implications it has for regional security and international military engagements.
