The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on Wednesday that it is considering disciplinary action against Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik. The investigation arises from Kramnik's persistent and unsubstantiated allegations of cheating against American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, who tragically passed away at the age of 29, with details surrounding his death remaining private.

Kramnik has accused Naroditsky of cheating in online chess games since October of last year, sharing these allegations actively on social media without presenting credible evidence. Naroditsky, who was an accomplished player having achieved the grandmaster title by age 18, firmly denied these claims and criticized Kramnik for attempting to tarnish his reputation.

Arkady Dvorkovich, president of FIDE, stated that Kramnik's public statements have been referred to the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission for further review. The federation emphasizes its commitment to take appropriate action in cases of public harassment or bullying, as outlined by its anti-cheating laws.

Since Naroditsky’s passing, various grandmasters have voiced their disapproval of Kramnik's accusations. Magnus Carlsen, a five-time world champion, labeled Kramnik's behavior as ‘appalling,’ while many in the chess community express concern over the damaging impact these allegations had on Naroditsky's mental health.

Kramnik responded to the investigation by calling it ‘insulting and unfair’ and denying any intention to harm Naroditsky, demanding that the federation back its claims with actual evidence of his alleged unworthy comments. His conduct has been scrutinized following similar harassment claims in the past, including incidents involving other players on online platforms.

The surge of online chess due to the COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated tensions and accusations in the chess arena. Players have continued to experience increased scrutiny and pressure in a landscape defined by rapidly evolving digital formats.

In memory of Naroditsky, FIDE announced plans to establish a prize, highlighting the importance of respectful conduct within the chess community and the ongoing risk posed by unchecked bullying and harassment.
