For nearly two months, federal agents have been conducting aggressive surprise raids across Chicago in line with the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Emerging from unmarked vehicles, agents have confronted and detained unsuspecting individuals in neighborhoods throughout the city.
The nature of these arrests has been described as both aggressive and violent. Witnesses report incidents of agents striking restrained individuals, deploying tear gas outside schools, and aiming pepper spray at onlookers concerned about the escalating situation.
A pervasive culture of fear has taken hold within the city’s largely Latino communities, with many residents expressing terror at leaving their homes. The shocking force used by agents has been widely discussed on social media and through local interviews.
Since the crackdown began in early September, referred to as Operation Midway Blitz, more than 3,300 arrests have taken place, according to the defense lawyers for some of the detainees. Alarmingly, these operations have also captured U.S. citizens in the sweep.
The federal operations have unfolded chaotically, targeting a mixture of neighborhoods, both affluent and impoverished, making stops in schools, workplaces, and even at popular attractions like Millennium Park.
Despite the fear instilled in the community, Chicagoans have banded together to document and confront the agents' actions, often pulling out their phones to capture videos of the incidents.
Witness accounts illustrate the disturbing realities of these raids. In East Side Chicago, one individual filmed as agents chased a young Black man into a pharmacy, leading to shouts from onlookers condemning the agents’ actions. In another instance, agents deployed tear gas in Lakeview, a neighborhood lined with expensive homes, causing chaos and alarm.
Families have been torn apart, like that of Uriel Villegas, who witnessed agents detain his brother during a work assignment, escalating tensions as angry crowds formed to defend the arrested individuals. In a separate incident, agents were seen engaging in violent confrontations with witnesses in Evanston, leading to widespread calls for accountability.
The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have not publicly commented on these actions. Previously, officials for the former administration defended the agents’ conduct.
As the raids continue, community solidarity and resistance appear to be growing, ensuring that the struggles against such aggressive immigration enforcement are captured and shared widely.
