In brief
Peng Yujiang, a 55-year-old paraglider, experienced a terrifying ascent into the clouds reaching 8,500m, after strong winds lifted him unexpectedly while testing equipment in the Qilian mountains. Authorities are looking into the incident, which resulted in his suspension for unauthorized flight.
A Chinese paraglider, Peng Yujiang, recently faced a life-threatening ordeal after he was involuntarily lifted to 8,500 meters (27,800 feet) above the ground due to a potent updraft while testing new equipment. The incident took place over the Qilian mountains in north-west China and has gained mass attention, especially as it was captured on camera and shared on Douyin, a Chinese social media platform similar to TikTok.On that fateful day, Peng, 55, had initially set off to evaluate the fit and comfort of his parachute from a mere altitude of 3,000 meters. However, strong winds unexpectedly swept him into the air, culminating in his dramatic rise into a dense cloud formation. The footage shows Peng grappling with the controls while struggling against icy conditions that enveloped him; his visage was obscured by frost.Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Peng recounted, "It was terrifying... Everything was white. I couldn't see any direction." He acknowledged that the lack of visibility and absences of spatial reference points made it nearly impossible to navigate. He admitted that he feared for his life, especially as he neared a height comparable to the top of Mount Everest, where oxygen levels are dangerously low and temperatures can drop to -40C.Attempts to descend met with obstacles as the relentless updraft continued to elevate him. At one point, he lost grip on his control over the glider, leading to a moment of disorientation. “I thought I was flying straight, but in reality, I was spinning,” he said, recalling the feelings of sheer panic that ensued.Following the incident, Chinese authorities launched an investigation; the state-run Global Times reported that Peng faced a six-month suspension due to the unauthorized nature of his flight. Despite his extensive four-and-a-half years of experience in paragliding, he did not intend to take to the skies that day. The unexpected winds had other plans, resulting in a heart-stopping encounter that has left an indelible mark in the community.
