In brief
The plight of Yazidi women and girls kidnapped by ISIS continues a decade later, as a group of amateur sleuths and activists steps up to search for their missing loved ones, filling gaps left by larger organizations.
The disappearance of Yazidi women and girls at the hands of ISIS militants a decade ago remains a haunting reality for many families. With the world largely moving on, a devoted group of activists, relatives, and volunteers refuses to abandon hope and takes on the challenge of locating these victims. Each photograph tells a story of a life interrupted. One image depicts a young girl, possibly no older than ten, her vibrant shirt and loose hair contrasting sharply with the grim reality of her fate. Beside her, an older woman's image portrays the toll of time, her figure cloaked in a black hijab. Each picture sparks hope amidst despair for those searching for answers.Among these tireless individuals is Pari Ibrahim, the executive director of a nonprofit based in Maryland. By day, she engages in her professional life, but by night, she immerses herself in the search for Yazidi women. Ibrahim meticulously examines hundreds of images and utilizes her keen eye to identify subtle details that may lead to an identification—a bow in the lips or a distinct mole."Ten years brings a lot of change into someone’s face and appearance," she reflects. "It’s not easy." Yet, Ibrahim and her network continue this quest despite the overwhelming odds. The Yazidi community faced unspeakable horrors during the ISIS offensive in 2014, with thousands of members brutally murdered, enslaved, and tortured. A United Nations report estimates that over 6,800 Yazidis were kidnapped in a single month during that year, leaving families devastated and divided. With little hope offered by international bodies, these amateur detectives dive into the unrelenting task of tracing the fates of the disappeared. Though the journey is fraught with challenges and heartache, they remain committed to restoring connections that were viciously severed. Their efforts embody a powerful testament to resilience and the unyielding spirit of a community that refuses to forget its lost members.
