The owner of Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic was arrested on Thursday after a catastrophic roof collapse resulted in the deaths of 236 people two months ago. The incident occurred during a live concert early on April 8, sparking a nationwide review of building inspections and safety measures. Prosecutors announced the charges of involuntary homicide against Antonio Espaillat, along with his sister Maribel, who managed the club.

The crucial turn in the investigation arose when an employee stepped forward, providing evidence that warned the club's management about the roof's deteriorating condition, insisting they needed to cancel the concert due to safety concerns. Following the tip-off, Espaillat appeared at the attorney general’s office in Santo Domingo for questioning and was subsequently detained.

Authorities cited "immense irresponsibility and negligence" on the part of the siblings, stating they failed to ensure proper repairs to the nightclub's roof. Furthermore, it was alleged that they attempted to intimidate potential witnesses connected to the case. The tragic event has raised serious questions about regulatory oversight in the construction and maintenance of public venues in the country, with many calling for stricter enforcement of safety standards.
