A sudden soil collapse at a water‑pipe construction site in Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan buried two workers on Thursday, with one confirmed dead and the other still missing, Xinhua reported.

Firefighters received a call around 1 p.m. that two workers had been trapped under soil, and they rescued one of the men, who was later transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. As of 4 p.m., the second worker had not been found and rescue crews continued their search.

Local media, including public broadcaster NHK, first reported the incident, and the local fire department confirmed the rescuers’ efforts. The collapse occurred as part of ongoing work on a water‑pipe system, but the source did not say whether equipment or environmental factors contributed to the slide.

The team remains on site as authorities conduct ground surveys and deploy excavation equipment in an attempt to recover the missing worker. Xinhua’s report stresses that the worker’s death was confirmed at the hospital, while the whereabouts of the missing employee remain unknown.
