In brief
As the brutal civil war in Sudan stretches into its third year, the dire humanitarian crisis has reached alarming proportions, with reports indicating that thirteen children have succumbed to severe food shortages at Lagawa camp, situated in East Darfur.
The Sudan Doctors Network revealed that these heartbreaking losses are a direct consequence of deteriorating conditions, compounded by rampant malnutrition among the camp's approximately 7,000 inhabitants. Despite previous notices of famine in Darfur, the situation has escalated, particularly as armed conflicts continue to disrupt essential supply chains and support systems.Medics have urgently called on both the global community and humanitarian organizations to mobilize resources and provide immediate assistance to those affected, especially vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women. The camp has faced relentless attacks from armed factions, exacerbating the ongoing crisis. In addition to food scarcity, the situation is worsened by a cholera outbreak in the region, with the UN reporting 1,500 cases in Tawila since June. The collapse of water and sanitation services, paired with insufficient vaccination efforts, has heightened risks of spreading this infectious disease.Since the outbreak of civil war in April 2023, millions have faced grave threats to their safety, health, and livelihoods, as conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rages on. With tens of thousands of civilian casualties and over 12 million people displaced, Sudan stands on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.
