A grievous shooting incident in Kashmir has rocked the region and the nation, claiming 26 lives, including tourists and local residents. The attack unfolded on Tuesday at a popular resort in Pahalgam, known for its scenic beauty akin to Switzerland, as gunmen opened fire on unsuspecting visitors.

Among the victims was an Indian naval officer, Vinay Narwal, who was on his honeymoon, along with a family-oriented businessman and a local tour guide. Eyewitnesses vividly recounted the panic that ensued when the bullets began to fly, prompting chaos as families ran for safety.

Veenu Bhai, who sustained a fractured arm during the carnage, described the tumultuous scene, stating that children were screaming and people were confused about what was happening. Another victim, Prashant Satpathy, was shot while exiting a ropeway, as described by his wife Priyadarshini.

The assault, one of the most devastating in years, appears to have deliberately targeted non-Muslims, with several eyewitness accounts indicating potential religious motivations. However, the Indian government has yet to clarify the specifics of the targeting.

In heartbreaking moments captured on video, Narwal’s wife, Himanshi, recalled her husband's final moments when an attacker inquired about their faith before fatally shooting him. Villagers and families grieved publicly, with some carrying the weight of losing multiple family members in this tragedy.

Marking a day of mourning, schools and businesses across Kashmir remained shut in protest. Residents expressed apprehension regarding the future of tourism in the region, fearing the attack would deter visitors and severely hurt the local economy.

The national response has been swift, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi returning from a foreign visit to convene security discussions. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh promised that those behind this heinous act would be sought out, reminding that past attacks have led to cross-border military actions blamed on Pakistan-supported militant groups, igniting concerns of increased tensions between the two nuclear powers.

The aftermath is characterized by profound grief and calls for justice. Many families remain in shock, struggling with their losses and the bleak reality of violence in Kashmir. As investigations continue, the community hopes for a resolution that restores security and peace.
